People have needed shelter for as long has they have been on the Earth. Thatch roofs were originally introduced in the year 735 AD. Today the basic shapes of roof are flat, skillion, gabled, hipped, arched and domed. The greatest number of domestic roofs are made up by pitched roofs, which include gabled, hipped, and skillion. The roof is most often supported on walls. This is not true in some types of building style however, that blur thedistinction between the wall and roof. With all of these different types and styles today fixing your roof can be an expensive job. This is part of the reason why roughly 34 billion dollars is made in the U.S. roofing industry annually. So, here are a few DIY roofing tips if you are trying to save a few dollars with do it yourself work.

The first of the DIY roofing tips is when fixing roof leaks, do not do it in a hurry. This also counts as one of the big roofing safety tips. Although a leak in the roof may be something that you want to give attention to immediately, that is not always the best plan. If it is raining, or there is ice or snow on your roof you should wait. This may seem like a simple tip, but many people need to hear it. There is no quick fix when you are trying to do a good job. So, be patient and careful and wait until conditions are safe for you to venture onto your roof.

The second of the DIY roofing tips is to spray your roof with a hose. If you know that your roof is leaking, but you are not exactly sure where from, this could be a great way to find out. It could also possibly allow you to find the leak in the shortest amount of time. Take your garden hose up onto your roof and begin spraying in different locations. This is not always a viable option however. If it is wintertime and you are experience temperatures that are freezing or below do not use this tactic. It is not safe to spray water onto your roof when it has the potential to freeze.

Finally the third of the DIY roofing tips is to prevent dry rot. This is more than just to fix a leaky roof. Dry rot is due to lack of ventilation, not water damage. If you need roof replacement right in the center of your roof, or see that the roof is sagging or the tiles are brittle there is a chance that the plywood is deteriorating. To prevent dry rot you must install a ridge vent. This will only work if there is a soffit vent. There must be holes drilled through the soffit vent so that cool air can come up from below and push hot air out through the top.

When your roof gets a leak and you want to fix it yourself, remember these DIY roofing tips that have been shared with you. Although some of the roofing repair tips may seem obvious, it is not uncommon that a leaky roof can lead people to make some irrational decisions. So remember these DIY roofing tips and keep your roof in great condition while keeping yourself safe in the process. Get more here: www.thunderbay-roofing.com Find out more about this topic here.
